Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

With the spring semester now behind us, I hope everyone can take time to enjoy the spring and summer months. This is the time that Campus Planning, Design and Construction (CPDC) prepares for its summer work on campus. There are many renovations and major projects planned throughout campus that will enhance the student experience, academic experience and overall enjoyment of our beautiful campus.
It is important to keep our campus community informed regarding our upcoming projects. As we have done in the past, we will host an information session to share our planned utility and site work for the summer later this month.

The renovations include new lighting, finishes, laboratory casework, fume hoods and mechanical and plumbing improvements to support new research equipment gravitational-wave astronomy and quantum optics.

Link Hall Allyn Innovation Center: Construction is wrapping up on the new south side building addition and entrance to the Allyn Innovation Center. This entrance and the west entrance are both ADA-compliant. The team has begun construction on phase 2 of the project, which is a full renovation of the east half of the first floor of Link, including the auditorium. This work is planned for the summer and will be open for the fall semester. Phase 3 of the project on the southwest portion of the first floor is planned for summer 2024.

113 Euclid Ave.: Numerous upgrades have been completed at this facility used by Indigenous students, including an elevator, kitchen and new ADA restroom and snow-melted ADA entrance and ramp. This phase will upgrade interior spaces, including lighting, walls/painting and doors.

100 Sims Drive (formerly Biology Research Labs): The nearly complete renovations will provide a new location for Syracuse University Global and include a new entrance lobby, two new recording studios and shop area on the first floor and additional office space, audio production and editing stations on the second floor. Both floors will have new finishes and lighting, and include a new mechanical system and elevator.

Schine Campus Store Renovations: All three levels of the Campus Store will be renovated this summer to allow for construction of a new esports center on the north half of the space. A new entry will be constructed from the Schine Student Center lobby, which will ultimately be shared with the esports center.

Smart Campus Initiative: The JMA Wireless private wireless network has been installed in 16 campus buildings and exterior antennas on 15 rooftops to provide full exterior coverage. This initiative will continue throughout the summer with the installation of the JMA network inside 11 additional residence halls, Bird Library and the Newhouse complex.

Housing:

  • Watson Hall Bathroom Renovations: Construction will begin on the first phase of the bathroom renovation project. Work is scheduled to begin this week to convert existing communal bathrooms into accessible single-user bathrooms with showers. Phase 1 will include renovations of the bathrooms on the east side of the building (Comstock Avenue side) this summer and phase 2 will include the bathrooms on the west side of the building in summer 2024.
  • Day Hall Elevator Modernization: Work commenced in April to replace and modernize the elevators in Day Hall. All three elevator cabs will be replaced along with the associated equipment.
  • Brockway Hall Air Conditioning Replacement: During summer 2022, a new air handler unit was installed in Brockway Hall. Due to a delay in the delivery of electrical equipment, some of the work is incomplete. The new electrical equipment has arrived and will be installed by the end of this month.
  • Brewster, Brockway, Boland (BBB): New exterior lights will be installed in the lower Brockway parking area, Van Buren Street and the BBB plaza.
  • Annual Duct Cleaning: This month, duct cleaning will occur in Sadler Hall, DellPlain Hall, Booth Hall, Washington Arms and Marion Hall.

JMA Wireless Dome Reseating and ADA Improvements: A large project is set to begin in the JMA Wireless Dome to replace all seats in the seating bowl and make extensive ADA and life safety building improvements. All the aluminum bleachers will be removed and replaced with chairback seating in late spring and summer 2024, for completion in August 2024. In preparation for the seating replacement, there will be ADA improvements, with widening of aisles to 48 inches, replacement of vomitory ramps, construction of new ADA seating platforms and railing replacements. Additionally, life safety improvements include installation of new fire sprinklers, fire alarm system upgrades and the addition of a building-wide smoke evacuation system.

Lally Football Operations Center: This summer the transformation of the Lally Athletics Complex will continue with the construction of a new football operations center. Excavation and site utility work will be the first activity on the site and will be followed by the demolition of the existing football wing to allow for the construction of a new, larger, modern operations center. Work will commence in June. The project will be completed in December 2024.

Softball Stadium Upgrades: Softball Stadium upgrades to the field, dugouts and bullpens are planned to start this summer and extend through the fall/winter to be ready for the 2024 season.

Schine Esports: This summer, preparations will be underway for construction to start this fall for the new esports center in Schine. The esports center will include PC and console gaming stations, competition stage, virtual reality, simulation space, and arcade and analog gaming areas.

Syracuse Stage Accessibility Upgrades: Contractors are replacing the ramp and stairs on the north and south sides of the building to be completed this month. A larger renovation is in progress for the building’s interior. This past year a new ADA-compliant dressing room and ADA-compliant restroom/shower were constructed in the basement. This summer, contractors will install a new elevator shaft and will be working on the basement, stage and second floor levels. The remainder of the elevator components will be installed during summer 2024.

Utility Projects: CenTrio, the operator of the Steam Station, is completing multiple utility projects on campus this summer, in coordination with CPDC. Here is a summary of work and major impacts for each project:

  • Irving Avenue Utilities: A large project is planned along Irving Avenue and across Stadium Place to install critical electrical infrastructure and upgrades to existing steam systems. The project will require a closure to Irving Avenue in June and a closure to Stadium Place in July. Vehicle traffic detours will be in place. The lower half of the covered stairs will be inaccessible for the duration of the project; pedestrians will have to detour up the stairs to JMA Dome Gate C or use the pedestrian bridge from the Irving Avenue Garage.
  • Comstock Avenue Steam Upgrades: A second phase of steam upgrades are planned for Comstock Avenue this summer. The work will be on the west side of the street and will be south of CST. No road closures are required but there will be a pedestrian detour required for the sidewalk on the west side.

Machinery Hall Cooling: A project is underway to provide cooling at Machinery Hall. Much of the piping and mechanical room work will be completed this summer to prepare for long-lead equipment arriving in 2024.

Smith Hall Cooling: Contractors are completing a project to enable the use of the campus chilled water system. Cooling will be provided to Room 226 and piping mains will be installed to facilitate cooling of other spaces in the future.

727 S. Crouse Ave.: A new loading dock will be constructed on the north side of the building to improve operations by moving trash removal and deliveries away from the main entrance. The work will begin in July and continue into the fall.

Heroy Generator and Electrical Upgrades: Upgraded electrical systems and a new emergency generator will provide emergency power to the facility’s laboratories. Due to long lead times, the generator will not arrive until 2024, but the necessary exterior site upgrades and a portion of the interior upgrades will be completed this summer in preparation.

Huntington Beard Crouse Furniture Renewal: Furniture will be upgraded in the basement and second and third levels this summer.

Campus Entry Booth Improvements: The welcome booths at the four corners of main campus will be renovated this summer and will include the installation of masonry stone veneer on the existing concrete planters.

College Place Hardscape: Improvements to College Place will include select concrete sidewalk replacements, paver replacements and improvements at the south intersection of Euclid Avenue and College Place.

Garages and Surface Lots: Annual University garage maintenance and parking lot resurfacing is scheduled during the summer months.
