Spatial Modifications

Any modification to a University facility affecting furniture, decor, signage, spatial configuration, utility systems, and structure must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction. In their review, the Office looks at compatibility with building architecture and aesthetic standards, as well as the regulatory impacts such as The Building Code of New York State, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Requests for aesthetic and/or improvements of a minor nature (i.e. painting, carpet replacement, etc.) to a spatial unit are to be in written form and processed through the appropriate Facilities Services management office. The zone manager will consult with the Office of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction to determine the technical requirements for the work. The Zone Manager will provide a written response based on the above consultations, establishing the funding requirement and source(s) schedule parameters, and coordinate implementation of the approved work.

Requests for significant spatial reconfigurations and renovations must be approved by the University administrator responsible for the affected area. In academic space, such requests must be approved by the department chair, the dean of the affected College and by the Office of Academic Affairs. These requests will be forwarded by Academic Affairs to the Office of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction for a formal study. As part of the study, Campus Planning, Design, and Construction will seek a design program and description of the major spaces, requesting the completion of spatial data sheets. Upon completion of the study, it will be forwarded to the administrator of the affected area or Academic Affairs, for consideration of funding authorization.

Requests for improvements involving renovations or functional improvements of a major nature or departmental space assignment changes are to be sent in written format to the Director of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction. The request will be assessed and authorization will be determined.

Requests for modifications to building exteriors and the landscape, including exterior signage, plantings, sidewalks, flagpoles, banners and benches require review and approval by the Office of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction. The request must be forwarded in writing. For commemorative or honorific signage, Institutional Advancement must be contacted first for determination of appropriate options. Then the Office of Campus Planning, Design, and Construction will work with the requesting department and Institutional Advancement to determine an appropriate solution and funding responsibility.
